Welcome to the immerging movement
of anit one-use-plastics
Why should you join this movement and boycott one use plastic?
|
- One use plastics have detrimental effects on the environment on human and animal health
- Plastic that's not recycled either ends up in landfills or in the environment
- Plastic can travel into rivers, lakes, and eventually into the ocean, which can injure and kill marine life. And from there enter the human food chain. 8 million tons of plastic end up in oceans every year.
- It can take from 200 to 1000 years for plastic to break down
- When plastic "breaks down" it can turn into microplastics that can be ingested by humans and other animals, causing health problems.
- Plastic can leach chemicals into the soil, water, and food.
- Both in manufacturing and when exposed to sunlight plastic releases sulfur oxides, nitrous oxides, methanol, ethylene oxide, and carbon dioxide. Which are contributors to climate change and the greenhouse effect.
- plastics can cause cancer, endocrine disruptors, hormonal imbalances when ingested through food and water.
- There are many more environmentally friendly alternatives to single-use plastics.
- The U.S produces over 380 million tons of plastic in one year, and 91% of that did not get recycled.
What are single use plastics? |
Some examples of one use
|
Single-use plastics are made from petrochemicals which are crude oil, natural gas, and petroleum. As the name suggests single-use plastics are plastic that has one purpose and after they are used they are thrown away or recycled. Though only 9% of plastic bottles(another form of single-use plastics) throughout the world was recycled in 2020. There is hardly a point to these plastics because there are so many alternatives. People were surviving modern life quire well before one use plastics were invented in 1979. And now with modern technology, there are evermore alternatives.
