At SAGE, we use a recyclable and compostable fiber product. While this item cannot be composted in our area, we chose it because it can be recycled AND when it ends up in a landfill, it does decompose with minimal off-gassing AND the front line sourcing is renewable and sustainable. It’s important to note that we cannot control what the end user does with our packaging – and our internal studies indicate that MOST of our packaging does not get recycled – MOST people simply throw it away.

Regarding Zia – we have minimal single use plastic, but we do have some. Single use plastic is found on drink cup lids and salsa cups. We have eliminated everything else. At SAGE, single use plastic is only found in drink cup lids. We do use paper straws in both locations. We use aluminum containers at Zia because of strong front line availability (aluminum is not renewable but it is plentiful) and sustainable recycling (recycling aluminum is a low energy expenditure). Still, a fiber product is likely better and yet we face uphill battles on costing & availability of these items.
